Travelling MADEIRA BY BUS:

The North Attracts with Lush Greenery

The north of Madeira is significantly more humid than the other regions. Here, the north-east trade wind meets the mountains, which leads to the frequent formation of clouds and rain and is absorbed by the mountains.

The dense laurel forests, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thrive particularly well here as they benefit from the regular rainfall. Temperatures are slightly lower on average in the north and the climate can be described as more temperate and cooler compared to the sunny south.

This region is particularly popular with hikers who want to explore the lush, green landscapes. For example, you can take the bus to Ponta Delgada or Boaventura (both bus line 6) and reach the most beautiful hiking trails (see AllTrails).

ER 211 Ponta Delgada closure lifted

Ponta Delgada

The Estrada Regional 211 between Ponta Delgada and Sao Vicente was reopened on 7 October 2024 and now nothing stands in the way of a walk between these two places …

After a storm at Christmas 2020, the road was badly damaged and has not been open to the public since. The section of the road at Sítio dos Lagares had completely collapsed.

Following the dismantling of an unstable embankment and the construction of a solid concrete wall, the road has now been reopened.
